I spent 16 years of my life with long, relaxed hair.

My last relaxer was in March 2010. After realizing how thin my hair had gotten over the years from relaxing, I decided to take a break from relaxing my hair. The intention wasn’t to have natural hair, but to go a few months without relaxing my hair.

After 6 months of not relaxing my hair, I made the conscious decision in September 2010 to go natural. I transitioned for 16 1/2 long months and in July 2011, I cut off the remaining relaxed ends.

I wasn’t planning to do a “big chop” at first, but I realized it would have taken about 4 years for me to transition completely and I was NOT waiting that long. My goal was to grow my natural hair long enough to have a ponytail before I cut off the relaxed ends and that’s exactly what I did.

If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t “big chop.” I found that I missed the length of my hair more than I missed having straight hair.
